Talking about Bowls
My Friend has only recently Bought a Set of Almark Edge and has offered to let me borrow them for a few days when the Outdoor Season Starts,
I am really tempted but last time I did this I messed my game up for weeks,
Is it a Good Idea to try different Bowls,

Hi Snapper,
I have just started bowling with some new bowls, but it's getting towards the end of our season.
Also I have finished all my major events that I had committed myself to, so I now have plenty of time to get used to them.
In my opinion I would say no, unless you were going to continue playing with them.

Its a very Bad Idea to try out New Bowls at the Beginning of the Summer wait until everything has finished and then look around and borrow Bowls that you want to try,
Good Idea for Friendlies not so Important then

I know one Bowler who plays for the County, and he has at least four Sets of Bowls, and uses different ones all depending on the Green and Weather
Did think about trying this.
Well peter, hope it wasn't me!! use to have several sets worrying about which green I was going to play on, then realized it was me, have one set now and just concentrate on the conditions and how to overcome them.
If I can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D
Had a phone call this afternoon from my Friend she has changed her Bowls I don't know how many times, and she was trying to put her Tigers and Classic Twos on Eba and was going to buy a bigger size Class's two,
Think she is mad but didn't tell her this my advice to her was to phone the local Bowls Shop up and ask them how much they would give her if she traded her Bowls in,
I don't think she would get much for them on Eba, am going to go and have a look at Lawn Bowls for Sale.
Shall Report Back I

Evening Jean
I had a bit of time on my hands and have been having a look at Bowls for Sale on EBay
Only ones that I could find were these there were a few sets of Taylors second hand but nothing interesting, not sure if your friend wouldn't be better off putting her Bowls on the Club Notice Board might get a better price and not have all the trouble of posting etc,

Mind they are only on at this price he still has to Sell them, Somebody got a good buy with yours but its Good to Sell Something you will never use again, bit like Cars once they come out of the Showroom they deprecate in Value,
Going to keep an eye on these Tiger2 Woods and see what they sell for
Bye for now Angel
Hi All,
Friend of mine has just bought a set of Classic 2's on e-bay size 4's, 5 years left to re stamping , paid £102 inc postage, think it was a bit expensive but he is happy, they have very little marks on, would think they have been used indoors only.

Morning All
That seems very expensive for a Second Hand set of Bowls and then they need restamping,
Have you any idea how much it costs to get Woods restamped had someone down the Club ask me this next week and I hadent a Clue,
Where I live the postage is Bound to be high
Happy Bolwing

They have just changed the rules here, that unless you are a rep you don't have to get your bowls restamped.
Interesting Kiwi
Still think our rules on stamping Bowls haven't changed but can see Bowls England following suit,
When you say rep do you mean someone Representing their County it would make sense for the ordinary Club Bowler its a big expense to keep getting your Bowls Re stamped lot of people cant afford this,

Yes, bowlers who represent NZ or their Centre, it was for the "Ordinary Bowler" that the rules were changed I have been told.
Hi Snapper,
I think the cost is about £25, postage is an issue, a bowls shop near me waits until he has a few sets to send off, then does them all at once.
Kiwi bowler is right (I think) that for club/league bowling etc the stamp is not an issue. You can enter County/National competitions but if you get through to the finals THEY have to have a current stamp. Personally I don't think the 2 standards help!! but then keep changing the rules don't help either.
Bowls England, bit like the E U have to follow the rules set by World Bowls, with the Southern Hemisphere having more votes as they have more members:mad:
If I was to buy a set of bowls I would like at lest 8 years on the stamp:cool:

Well done 'Big Bear', I put up a note on my outdoor club board & sold an old set for £15, a new member has them, well he was a couple of years ago, he has had them re stamped and playing like a demon with them!!
wish I had kept them now!!!!!!!!:(:(
Hi All, Never can understand why Bowls are so expensive, don't matter where you live the price seems about the same.
Still always a good second hand market, I think they keep bringing in these straight ones hoping bowlers will keep changing woods.
I can't get on with straight woods, need a bit of a bend to help with the weight!!!!:D

Have any of you Noticed the Price Increase that the manufactures put on these New Makes of Bowls,
When I started Bowling you could buy a new set of Bowls for a reasonable amount now you need to take out a bank loan,
How they can warrant the price Increase I don't know,

Hi Surfer, I have just rung up a local sports shop for the cost of a new set of Henselite Classic two's, black and was told NZ$629.00. Which I think is very expensive and if I want colour ones it's NZ$100 more:(.
So how much are they in England or Aussie if there's someone from Australia reading this, thanks.

G'Day, Kiwi Bowler,
Big rip off right Blue price of new Woods, especially the colored ones!
Mate of mine just bought a set of Dreamlike to handle these big swings on burnt greens and paid $649.00, about the standard price. Reckon cause they last for so long, don't make a dollar on em that often!!!
Also we make them & the price can be cheaper in the Northern Hemisphere!

02-12-2010, 11:50 AM
Yes Skippy something fishy going on:)
At Julian Haines Bowls Ltd(England site)
Henselite Classic two's Black 172 pounds exchange to current NZ$388.60
my cost to buy in NZ nz$629.00
Henselite Classic two's colour 207.75 pounds exchange to current NZ$469.30
my cost to buy in NZ nz$729.00
I also note the pounds price includes Vat of 15% what ever that is.
Which means it's nz$240.50 dearer in NZ for the Black bowls and nz$259.70 dearer for the coloured:confused::confused:
I wonder if I was to email Henselite Australia what they would sat about it?

Hi Ripped off Bowlers,
Can't imagine that any one would pay more than about £190 that we pay in the U,K, for Henselite colored bowls!!!
All I know that if there is non in stock & after a UK stock search the dealer
says 'Have to wait until the next shipment arrives,by boat, from Henselite', always seems strange to me. Expect they fill a few containers to a central distribution point.
My wife did buy via the internet some great boling hats for her ladies club members and they were great and a BARGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just can't understand why Henselite are made in Australia and we can buy them cheaper!!!!
Is it that there are more brands in the U.K. so they have to price competitively??????????
kiwi bowler
02-12-2010, 08:49 PM
Good Morning Bargain Hunter
We have all the brands of bowls here in New Zealand and they are all far dearer than what you pay over there even with the exchange rates.:(

Still feeling very angry about how much more we pay here for new bowls even with the exchange rate, than you guys.
So I have sent an email to Henselite NZ and will wait with interest as to how they respond to me, if they respond?

Kiwi Bowler thats great!! didn't get my handle 'Bargain Hunt' from nowhere.
Will be very interesting if they reply & what they say!!!
(hope they don't increase U.K. prices:() have corrected my previous post, cost of decent set of colored henselite is £190 about.
After & if they reply we could consider an on line petition about the price of bowls and the variations!!!! Could it be one reason that in N Z there is not so many bowlers less bowls sold so more expensive!!
Where I live in the U K cars are so expensive compared with other parts in England,
Went to a dealer and showed him a dealer near London offering a 1 year old car nearly exactly the same he was offering to sell but he was £1500 dearer!!!!
He said we are more expensive as we sell less cars cars and have to make more money on each one!!!! WHAT A RIP OFF¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬:(

British retailers do not make a profit from selling bowls, a loss leader perhaps, and make their money on all the other gear.
Oz retailers and I would imagine NZ the same need to make a profit on their investment. Not a cheap item to invest one's capital in and would be desirable to gain a reasonable return from that investment.

Hi Kiwi
Typical but at least you got a reply usually these big Companies ignore Customers Letters
I have Complained a few time epically to British Telecom about our Phone every time it rains we can hear half the people in the Village Talking,
Took over a year of complaining before they sorted it out, the rain was getting into a junction Box,
The Bigger the Company the more they ignore Customers.
Surfer from Cornwall:cool:
Hi All,
a friend of mine works part time in a bowls shop and says 'thay do make a profit on new Bowls'.!!!!!!!!!!!!
He says how could they not bowls & equipment lasts a long time and bowlers a notoriously slow at renewing their equipment!!!!!!!!!!
Also h says colored shirts have been a boon to bowls shops with clubs ordering substantial stocks. Often the wrong color/design/material in the first place then a year or so later ordering the proper material etc. Then colored tops etc so don't think they are not making money he reckons 30% on new bowls!
So the bowlers in Oz & NZ are being ripped off!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still waiting for what Henselite NZ is going to say about why new bowls are approx $250.00 dearer here that the UK and as I say that's with the exchange rates!!

Thanks Kiwi Bowler & Del,
Good debate especially as we are trying to get new bowlers into the sport, Woods are the most expensive bit of equipment.
Sport England have been good to my Club to help recruit youngsters into the sport with grants on several £1000's for equipment etc!!!
Look forward to hearing the reply!!!
What a post always knew we are ripped off.
Full support for Kiwi Bowler, doubt though Hensilite can reply to specific question!!!
They know whats going on, they only have to search on line and U.K. prices come up.
They must think were THICK!!!!:(

Hi Roo,
No Henselite NZ has still not answered my question, so I have sent them another email plus one this time to Henselite Australia.
I will give them another week and see what happens, if no luck I'm thinking about trying "Campbell live"? it might make a good story or there must be some organisation I can go to?

Got another silly reply from Henselite NZ this morning, saying sorry I was away last week, then asking if these prices include GST and Shipping?
So I replyed as follows:
There prices include VAT and I’m just comparing prices as per bowlers in the UK and Bowlers in NZ to buy.
This is more about how much more kiwi bowlers have to pay for bowls than our fellow bowlers in the Uk, yet the bowls are made in Australia. Even Australian prices are higher than what they pay in the UK.
I think something is sure wrong here!
So I will now have to most likely wait another week, for his next email?

Good evening all, I got the following reply from Henselite Australia:
The markets ,taxes and duties are very different in each country, and we cannot control pricing by law.
Regards,
Bruce Hensell
Chairman
Henselite (Australia) Pty. Ltd.
Ph: (03) 9488 0433
So this tells me that we have higher taxes in NZ and Australia? But really I think our retailers here are just greedy and want to make lots of profit.

Thats Great Kiwi Bowler,
Have to agree with you that they can screw you a bit more than us, when you consider the transportation costs to the U.K. its a bit of a joke.
They are quite clear in the reply the three cost issues;
Market-----------Taxes-------------Duties
Clearly its the market place and what they can charge and GET away with!!!!!
Would be interested Kiwi Bowler if you asked a UK supplier to supply a set of Bowls and what the Post & Packing would be??
Be a bit of a joke if the Bowls are made in Australia, shipped to UK then posted back again including U.K.vat tax AND IT WORKED OUT CHEAPER!
Would be interesting:eek:

Hi Everyone,
Understand the concern on the varying prices of woods!!!
I work in the New Car industry and see bigger rip offs not only between countries but in different areas of England!!!!
Think don't matter what you are selling you get charged up to what the can get away with!!!
What is so amusing about woods is that they are more expensive where they are made than across the world!!!!

Shipping to NZ is 65 pounds and I'm exempt from paying your VAT, so I would still save myself about NZ$160 if I was to buy a new set from the UK.

Use to worry about fuel things and the carbon footprint, then you read how lorries in convoy, SNOW for the Winter Olympics, so participants cane come down slabs of ice on tea tray looking things.
Did enjoy the Ski Cross, new event where 4 skies came out of the blocks and raced down, great viewing.
Hi All Bowlers,
Don't know what all this is about, as a sport/hobby bowling is one on the cheapest ones around, depends how many times you visit the BAR!!!
Once you get the kit you're there!!!!!! Compared to Golf etc!
Maybe Henselite is ripping us off I always buy secondhand, there lots of bowlers that buy new woods, can't get on with them and sell half price!!!
It's good to see the big corps under the light, they charge what mugs will pay!!
