Have been hearing some reports about these woods and they are supposed to have the straight running line right up the middle, someone told me they have no curve or finish, but very hard to beat someone playing with these,
Havend played against anyone with these Edge Woods if any of you Bowlers have any information or thoughts
Would appriciate your info

G'day Surfer,
I use black edges stamped '16' they are a narrow bowl and are even tighter on the slower surfaces. The problem with them is they react to any uneveness of the surface you are playing on. They do hold their line when you use weight. But like any wood you still need to use the right weight and grass....

The price looks good for these Almark Edge Woods, on some of the Other makes we are nearly up to £200 pounds, plus postage,
But with our uneaven Greens they wouldent be any good, got one green that they scurrified the wrong way, so when you bowl every wood bounces over the runs, ought to see what the Jack does,
Everyone is complaining about it, Someone on Green Maintaince made a big mistake,

Morning Kate
I haven't seen anyone using these new Almark Edge, think they are used more on fast or artificial greens,
Would take my time and try our some other Bowls more suited to our Weather, the Classis 11 are a good narrow wood with a bit of swing better
on wet greens,
Try and Borrow a some and have a roll up might save you some trouble and cash in the long run,

Hi Kate,
I have seen a number of Almark edge bowls but they need a green speed of 14 sec + to be of any use slower greens make them quite unstable. I have just swapped to greenmaster premiers which have so far been very good up to a green speed of 14 sec. Over 14 sec I have found them to be too wide. I love the line, they seem to perform as well in the wind as compared to a dreamline. I have also purchased a set of greenmaster powers for faster greens. They perofrm at best at 14+ sec green. They are exactly the same color and size. It has been interestig to not that if I pick the wrong bowlfor the green speed it makes a huge difference. I have tried the powers on a slow green and could not do a thing right with the bowl and yet when I changed to thepremier on the same green I played much better. The classic II,series C although very few bowlers use them over here now, seem to handle all the undulating greens better than most. Once again if the green speed gets up then they are quite wide. Its a hard decision. By the way I have used the dreamline and ABT EVO, think the dreamline is a better all green bowl. Interesting to note that oftern different coloured bowls play slightly differently. White speckle are all the rage and their line is tighter than the premier.
Thanks for the info Bundyboy, really interesting about the speckled woods have noticed most of the top Bowlers are favoring these,
Have a set of Dream Line which are red and I play Indoors with them, they are great on the fast artificial greens, both in doors and out,
Get a lot of complaints about the narrow line they take, sure they only complain when I win,
Be Interesting to see if anyone uses these Almark Edge they are relatively new in the UK
Sam short for Samantha:rolleyes:
Hi Everyone,
Played against a 4's yesterday the lead had a pair of these Almark Edge,
he only took a foot of green both hands & we needed a good 4 feet of green.
The lead was quite good with these woods as his weight was spot on, we did manage to win but the Almarks did give a few problems.
Certainly good easy woods for leads but no good in any other position!!!!
as you can never draw round anything to get out of trouble!!
Seems the way bowls is going, don't think it's good for the game!!

Morning Everyone,
Interesting to hear from Bowlers who have played with these New Almark Edge,
I personally need a Bowl that has a bit of a swing, but recently some of the greens I have played on have been dreadful, with straight runs and I do mean straight right up the middle,
Not sure if the men are saving the best settings for their evening games but feel at times its more like skittles than Bowling,
Shall keep a look out when I next play for anyone using these Bowls

Saw a pair of these being used today. The owner told me that they are no use to anybody but a lead. They were almost straight

I think its about time something was done about these straight woods, there is no skill in putting a Bowl straight up the green,
Bowls England should look at banning woods that are too straight,
Glad someone else thinks these Bowls are usless

Hi,
I use a set of size 4 'Tigers' good for me and can hold a tightish line. Have seen these Almark Edge in action and straight as you can think!!!!
Many around me are saying that these type of woods are ruining the game and giving the tighties a big advantage especially in singles.
I'm not that fussed but lately am coming round to there view point!!!
Suppose if we were to start from scratched all woods should have same bias and all down to skill!!!!!!!!
Then that would be too easy.
Frankie;)

Hi Frankie,
Unfortunately it is human nature to try to get an advantage over your opponent. Heard a story about the great John Snell. Back in the days when all bowls were suppose to be the same, one model only, John Snell would be allowed to watch the blanks( bowls out of the mould) and choose the 4 blanks that took the narrowest line and had them made into a set.
There is lots of info about the world governing body stuff up on how bowls are tested. Testing mats that wear out allowing straighter bowls to be legal. Manufactures only make money when people buy bowls, so its in their interest to keep producing better and better bowls or different ones. AHHHHHHHH, its all too confusing.....

Hi Bundyboy,
You make some very good points and understand the commercial aspects of 'Bowl makers' making money.
Around our area Clubs are getting less members and struggling to put in teams whilst there are many reasons ie; reluctance of current bowlers to recruit because they are worried about losing there team places etc, when a lot of bowlers lose they blame straight woods against them or other excuses!!!

Had to laugh yesterday our girls played against a team in the fours, and the number three moaned the whole game about our Classic two, we really beat them solid,
When they were having tea one of our girls had enough of this particular Bowling moaning about straight woods and casually asked what sort of Bowls she had,
You wouldn't believe it the other player only played with Tiger Twos, talk about calling the kettle black, she went a bit quiet after that,
Some People Angel:rolleyes:
