Watched the Mens Singles Final this weekend, One very good not so young Bowler, he is seventy eight by the way
Played four games the day before he is a super chap and pretty fit, what annoyed me was the tactics if you could call them that,
It was a hot Sunny day and his opponent walked up every end after his second wood, had every jack length measured when there was absolutely no need,
And slowed play down to a crawl with so many questions, it got painful to watch, this chap didn't out bowl his opponent he wore him down,
Something should be added to the rules to stop this sort of behavior, as far as I know there is nothing in there to say a player cant get away with this,
All perfectly legal and very Wrong Snapper:confused:
The laws clearly state that a bowler in singles play can not go to the head till after he has delivered his 3rd wood !!

Hi Red you are definitely right, this Chap should not have been allowed to visit the head until he had played his third bowl
You would have thought in a County Game the Umpire would know this, but if no one complains I suppose there is nothing that can be done
Its something I will watch out for if I am playing a singles game
Hi Red,
Have just read the 'Laws of Sport', and I think you are right and Wrong.
Pasted the key bit below
Restricting the movement of players during play
If a Controlling Body decides that it is appropriate to restrict the movement of players during play, provision for this should be included within the Conditions of Play in line with the following.
So for a normal game in singles a player cam visit the head at any time unless the Controlling wish to restrict players movement often because of time pressures or weather etc!!
Hope you agree,

Hi Roo , was just going from memory , could be a TV rule, should be somewhere in all conditions of playHi Red,

Hi Red,
Thanks for conformation, played a very good bowler a few weeks ago in a final, he was like a rabbit at times off to the head after his first wood!! all tactics, really put me off and I lost, thats my excuse anyway!!
We have a couple of big tournaments in our area that attract maximum entries and they include the 'restriction of players rule' so they can get all the games in.

Yes Roo you are right.
But snapper I'm surprised the controling body didn't have any conditions on " Restricting the movement of players during play".
Most major competitions here in NZ now have conditions on this.
But I also think if it was a clear case that he was slowing the game down by measuring bowls he didn't have to or asking questions that he didn't need to, he could have been warned by the umpire. As mentioned in another topic on slowing the game down.

It would be a good idea if Bowls England came up with something to stop people using these tactics,
I played a Lady last year and she asked so many questions every end, that i ended up sitting on the back of the rink in frustration,
How far is my wood off the Jack where is my second wood where is my oppositions nearest wood, it went on end after end,
I do know you need to know certain things when playing a game, but it would have been so much easier if she had gone and had a look,
They might restrict the number of questions asked

As a marker if I was subjected to numerous questions I would answer the first and then suggest that the player visits the head.
This may sound fine fot the players but if the controlling body has put a restriction on visits they soon get on with the game.
