Hi all , thought I would try my luck with this topic which was raised recently at our Club. One solution was to have a split rink but it has a few problems like - some bowlers refuse to play in them, others do but grumble and others dont seem to mind and so get confused about whoes turn it is !. Does anyone have any good ideas to accomodate everyone when you have odd numbers for social.

If you can't do the math to get it to work into some rinks of triples and some fours, you may have to play a 3 against a 4, in this case the triples lead and two would bowl three each and the skip just two, giving each team 8 bowls.
We had this situation Indoors when a player wouldn't turn up, usually when they forgot they had a game on,
If they played three against four they would lose a third of their score the Committee of the day thought this was fair hated playing this way myself

Hi Sam, sometimes we do this but we never make one team give away any of there score.
Hi Kiwi Bowler,
It's interesting that the team with a player short does not forfeit any of their score.
As a generally rule with club leagues etc, the team with a player short losses ;in 4's 25% in triples 33%, this is on the basis that the team with the player short have extra woods each and it seems fair!!!

Both teams still have the same total number of bowls here, but we are talking about social games.

Hi Kiwi Bowler
They seem to take off a quarter of your score if you are a player short, not only in league games but also in friendlies
Have always thought this is wrong but once a rule is made the Clubs over here seem to stick to it
Sure they are obsessed with enforcing rules no matter how stupid they are,

Page 63 in the CMIII Rule 46.2.2 is the generally accepted rule that should be followed. Rules of the game can be found here:-
http://www.worldbowlsltd.co.uk/main.html
it is so important that players read and understand the rules of our game. Your local association may also have some Domestic Rules.
Hi All,
I am one of the guilty bowlers that think! they know the rules but never really read them.
Thanks mickpacholli I followed the link and checked the rules, interesting this area is covered, the rule below;
the number of bowls played by each defaulting team should be made up by the lead and second, both playing three bowls; and
one fourth of the total shots scored (including decimal places) by each defaulting team should be deducted from their score after the game has finished.I understand that in competition games etc the team with a player short forfeits the game but in friendlies/social and side games etc the % of the shots are forfeited.
Thanks,
John

Yes mate a social rink shouldn't be forfeited because they are short, sort of takes away the social bit eh, but it makes sense to use the team rule in these occasions, hence less chance for colloquial argument.

Hi Mick, yes I would agree with this rule for competitions, but for social games at a club the "Conditions of Play" are up to the Controlling Bodies, Domestic regulations Rule 17.2 World Bowls.
In my Clubs hand book it has for Club Roll Ups and Social Events: "The Match Committee reserves the right to alter conditions of play to suit the day".
In NSW most clubs have a bowls secretary who gets an honararium to run social bowls and he is the floater who fills in or does not play to make sure there is always even numbers!

17.2 also refers to Appendix 1A and that requires games to be played within the laws of the Sport as published. These rules allow variations.
Hi Everyone I end up getting the last min phone call when someone doesn't turn up
Got one Elderly Gent who is getting a bit forgetful have even had to stand in and play in a Presidents game which is all men
Had to come out of the kitchen put on my waterproof skirt over my day clothes and played three to a very huffy Skip
Had a large club double before the game never played three in my life

Hi Sam, so it's useful calling yourself "Sam", if you can play for both the men and ladies:grin::grin:
Hi Kiwi Bowler, doesn't work like that could always stuff my hair under a hat and wear a large Jacket
Have had a few men suggest I do this they had the idea I play better than some of their team mates, thats after they have had a drink around the bar
Wish I had given my name some thought before I registered on World Bowler could change it but got used to it
Think I would have used one like Sexy Socks or Bowled Over they are more original
Think I will sigh off Lady Sam:D:D
