Well I have done it, I have bid on a trademe auction and won me a set of Dreamline's for NZ $210,(that's approx 81 pounds) they are size 3H and date stamp 13.
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/19/90503519_full.jpg
I'm going to get them Thursday morning as going away for Easter.

They are a size smaller than I have been playing with, but I have wanted to go down to a size 3 for a while now.

My plan is to start bowling with them over the winter, so I will be used to them when our season starts in September.

Hi Kiwi Bowler

Great Looking set of woods, were they second hand or new, think you got a bargain either way they would cost double and more if you were buying them in England

They are second hand and I think they are a very good buy here in NZ. We are not able to get Dreamlines new in NZ anymore - but still available in Ausie.
I'm going to pick them up later on this morning:grin:

Hi Kiwi Bowler

You got a good deal, I always trade in my old woods its like buying a car as soon as you drive it away you have lost thousands same with Bowls

Got a Chap in my Club who bought a set of Classic last week cost him Two hundered and twenty pounds, think the dealer seen him coming,

This is expensive only hope he is happy with them

Hi pops, we don't have dealers here that you can trade in your old bowls to buy others. We only have retails that sell new or one buy second hand from bowlers themselves.
I will be trying to sell my old bowls on trademe (an auction site) at the end of May as I still have a centre event in the beginning of May, the champ triples that I'm in.
Then over the winter I will bowls with my Dreamlines,

Over here we have bowls shops that stock shirts trousers and anything else you would need for bowling,
Also you can order new woods, they do charge a high price but they will trade in your old wood against a new set, and it makes them more affordable
The shop then wackes on some profit and resells your old woods, saves all the trouble of putting up your woods for sale down the club
We get a lot on Ebay but the postage is high and until you actually see the Bowls its hard to tell what they are like,
Like the sound of your auctions can you view the woods on line before you bid,

Hi Kiwi Bowler

You have done very well in your champs triples, with your original woods why are you changing, or are the new dreamline only for playing on artificial greens, sound like you play very well with your old woods,

Hi Peter, yes I have played quite well with my Henselite Masters over the years, thanks. They take a wide green and are very good for draw bowling.
But I have decided I would like to change to a narrower bowl as I find I'm doing a lot of skipiing these days and I think the Dreamlines are better for the upshots.
As for the greens I play mostly on Artificial as that's what my club has and this did cause me to get my bowls re-biased and polished about a year ago, because of the sand damage.

Hi Kiwi Bowler if you are changing positions its not a bad idea to change woods, thing that is puzzling me is do you have sand on your greens this is something that isn't done in the UK, get a lot of greens that have hardly any grass left at the end of the Season

Good morning surfer, I'm refering to artificial greens, most are sand based.

Some are worst than others especially one of the one's at our club, I will take a photo of my bowls after I play there next. Which should help to show the damage they get.

Noticed last year that the Colored Woods get scratched a lot more that the Black
Not sure why this would happen maybe the Bowls I noticed had taken a bashing form a determined Skip

Hi Bigbear, I have seen that too. That was another reason I choose to get black replacement bowls, rather than colour ones.

Now that its been mentioned I have noticed our Skips green woods are badly marked
Good Idea to stick with Black, We have one lead who uses bright yellow wood I think the other players can spot them better and knock them around gives them something to aim for

Hi Surfer, this was after 1 hours bowling yesterday.

Note, after bowling each day I have to clean my bowls to remove the sand because of it's abrasive effect on the bowls. I also use Bett's Bowl Grip and sometimes the clubs polisher.

HI Kiwi Bowler,
We are just having our sand filled synthetic replaced after about 9 years. Our bowls did get scatched but so long as you clean them before each or after a bowling session the scratching is minimal. The biggest problem was when players drove hit a bowl, if that bowl had sand on it then the impact of the bowls would leave a pitting mark on the.

See what you mean about the Damage to your Woods, looks bad
We don't have the same problem over here probably because we only have two outdoor artificial greens in our Division
The main problem for damage is what each club puts in the ditch these last few years it has got better with shredded rubber tyres but some Clubs still have pebbles (not good)

All we have to worry about is the Skip Whacking your Bowl,

Hi All,

Dream line were a NIGHTMARE for me, have found some bowlers are brilliant with them but for me a complete nightmare, playing back end I had no chance, your weight has to be spot on as there is very little bend for the to wood to lock on, I just went past.
If I was a lot down to start with, found it so hard to reduce or even to get shot.
Maybe because I'm not good enough or hopefully it's the DREAM LINE!!!

Hi Bargain Hunt,

Everyone I know who bowls with dreanlines have had no problems with them. One particular bowler (an Auckland Rep), who uses them, I played against in a pairs competition earlier in the season and boy could he draw with them and do up-shots with a lot of success.
This was one of the main reasons I thought I would change to Dreamlines. Also as I'm playing skip a lot, anyway depending on the weather I will be using them this Thursday and or Saturday. If I then like them I will use them all winter to get used to them, ready for next season starting in September.

Good to hear that you are getting on with them, have seen bowlers that can master the tight lines and they are always tough competition!!

For me I like the hook or should I say that with tighter woods I think your weight has to be very precise with a hook you can often rattle in on something!!!

Hi Bargain Hunt, fishing good here too, I just don't get enough time to go fishing with playing too much bowls - as my family tell me.

But hoping to change all that, as we are thinking about moving back up north permanently, where the fishing is great and the greens are nice and fast.

I tried to play bowls Sat afternoon, but the green was just too heavy for me - they hadn't been mowed!
We did win in the end, but it just wasn't bowls

Good evening Snapper,

We do have a home up north which we own (members photos) and we own our home in Auckland with a mortgage:(.

We have decided not to sell our home in Auckland at this stage, even though the market here has just started to move.
We will just use it ourselves, when we are in Auckland.

Also we have no plans to rent it out as we have had enough of tenants, after past bad experiences.

Thats really interesting, when I bought a set I just could not get on with the Dreamline and sold them soon afterwords!!!!!!!!!!

A great pity (apart from borrowing from friends) is that you have to buy a set before you know if you can get on with them!!!

Would be great if a Bowls Sales shop ran sessions with different type of Bowls, Buy before you Buy!!!!!!!

Hope the Dreamlines work out long term!:p

Frankie, Have always thought you need to be a better bowler to play with straight woods, weight needs to be spot on as they will just run out of the head, its no coincidence that world champions have swinging woods to dray into the head etc!!!:)

Hi Kiwi Bowler,

Thanks for that, have to say as I find it, I just could not get on with them, my Classic 2's have that bit of a hook on the end & if I'm just a touch overweight they will still rest in there while my @Dreemlines' just roll out the head, my weight is just not that good!!!:p

Hi John,
I think I might have been put off my Dreamline's:grin:, at bowls today I started off good, then I took more attention to how my bowls finished :( and now I have gone right off them.

So thinking now I will change my bowls again and either get a set of Classic Two's, which here are NZ$629 new for black ones or maybe Taylor Vector VS which currently have a Special run out price of NZ$395 for Black as there's a new model coming out.

What's your comments on these two types of bowls?

John
02-12-2010, 10:46 AM
Good Morning Kiwi Bowler,

Thats really interesting, my story is that I skip indoor and out and play a lot of National & single games in the summer and have been lucky enough to have good run.
You know what its like you play someone who has an outstanding game so you end up thinking it's the woods!!!

So Ive tried/bought all sorts, start of this indoor season bought a set of tiger 2's, I was dreadful, could not draw to cut down or add they just rolled out the head, had the same experience with dreamline.
Reflecting because I always kept my CLASSIC 2's probably never gave the new woods long enough to play them in.
As soon as I went back to me Classic 2's I was immediately back on form.

So I do think Dreamline have a place (my wife bowls with dreamline, she leads and sets up many a rink for big wins) but unless you have a clearish draw to the jack, I think you are in trouble!!

Sorry its so long but do feel passionate about this as I just can't play with to straight a wood!!

Hope this is of some help (think I would have same problem with Vectors):D

Yes John that's what happened to me on Thursday in a freindly, my lead and two seemed to be short all the time and when we changed over we were always down 2 or 3 shots.
and I just had to try and draw to save as we never seemed to have any back bowls and I couldn't go around the bowls, like I used to with my Masters Deluxe. I managed to save quite a few ends but I couldn't do it all the time:(.
But again maybe I just need more competition practice with them.

Hi John, I went and got some advise and coaching from my Auntie today at my first bowling club.
She is the head coach their and also a very good bowler. I had phoned her up about my concerns with my new bowls.
Anyway we tried my Dreamlines out plus her Classic Two's and some Evo's which we didn't like at all.
So in the I concentrated on bowling with my Dreamlines with some tips from Auntie, while she used her classic twos and I found I could draw around bowls with them. I also started to draw very well with them, we were bowling on a supa grass artificial green that was running quite fast.
Anyway after the coaching from my Auntie I/we have decided I should give them another 2 to 3 months before I make a decision.
She has also asked me to look out for a set of size 3 Dreamlines for her as she liked them.

John
02-14-2010, 10:12 PM
Ho Kiwi Bowler.
I'm sure shes right that who have to give new bowls more time to settle in.

We played in our Club open triples today(Sunday) £250 prize money, started 9am round robin 3 sets of 5 ends, lots on concentration and play against lots of different bowlers & woods.

Well we managed to scrape in and won the 1st prize, but when we played against a skip with Dreamlines or straight woods we had our biggest wins.
The skips with dreamlines seem to lose patience and run at the head!!!
Lots of times if they had hit the target we would have been in trouble, they didn't and we wasn't!!!!!!

Don't blame you for persevering but I have big doubts about them!!!:)

02-15-2010, 12:26 AM
Hi John, well done on your win:grin:.

Question was this on an out door green or indoors and are the greens very fast? Not sure if this makes a difference but asking anyway.

Also do you use your Classic two's for both indoor and out door bowling?

When I was at bowls this morning before the rain came (yes it's raining here:grin:), I had a go with a mates set of Vector VS Precision Black bowls and I found these drew very well, similar to my old master deluxe but a bit narrower.

John
02-15-2010, 09:33 AM
Morning Kiwi Bowler,

Outdoor in U.K. at the moment, 'iced up' to cold for me!!

From September -- end of April it's indoor then Out Door.

So yesterday was indoor greengage carpet on concrete, 6 rinks and moderately quick!!

Yes do use Classic 2's for indoor and outdoor, for me I get use to the woods 12 months of the year, only downside is that I find the ditch hand on some indoor rinks a bit of a challenge!!

I'm probably not the one to discuss the benefits of straight woods as I have said before I struggle to play with them & love to play against them 'Most Times'!!!!

02-16-2010, 03:52 AM
Thanks again John for all your advise.

I have noticed the Dreamlines are much better on faster greens, I played on an Artificial green today running at 17 - 18 sec, fast but I loved it. It was just a friendly game, but yes my team won.

The game I played last Thursday was on a Star Weed green and it was slower than normal because it hadn't been mowed, running at approx 14 - 15 sec.

I have decided I'm going to carry on using them for another 2 - 3 months like my Auntie has suggested and then decide and I will let you know then how I get on.

John
02-16-2010, 09:37 AM
Thanks Kiwi Bowler for the update!!!

Will be really interesting a few months down the road, do understand what you mean about faster greens, one issue in the U.K the greens can vary so much from one day outside artificial then dry grass, wet cold grass, so a utility wood is ideal.

best of luck with them!!!

Hi guys an update on my "Dreamlines", I have been playing a few pairs as Skip and singles with them lately and am bowling quite well with them. I have also noticed that they do have a bit of a swing.

I also won the mixed consistency singles at my club with them, so I think it's just practice with what ever bowls you use.

Hi Kiwi Bowler,

thanks again with the update, AND that you are doing well with them!!!

Are you getting any moaning about STRAIGHT WOODS!! I had bucket loads of it & I guess didn't help.

What you are saying goes to show thats it you & the Woods and you have to overcome whatever.

Still I do know a few very good bowlers who had the 'Dream lines' have gone back to swinging woods!

:D

Well done with your Singles Win Kiwi Bowler, I use Dream line Indoors and get on very well with them and am in the Club singles final they do have a good line with a swing when needed, must say I don't use them outdoors because of the wet heavy greens we get at the beginning of the Season, but would recommend them to any Indoor Bowler,

Hi John

Have played a little bit over the winter with the "Dreamlines" and have found them very good for the up-shots. But I don't think I'm drawing as well with them as I did with my old Masters Deluxe Bowls.

Yes I have had the comments about them being very narrow and have a sort of straight finish.

I also do miss my old Henselite Masters Deluxe Bowls, which were a very good draw bowl. Pretty similar to the Classic Two's.

Lately with the new season nearly here I have been thinking about watching out for another set of my old bowls, Henselite Masters Deluxe and going back to them.

Hi Kiwi Bowler,

Thats interesting, I only know a few leads still using 'Dreamlines' alright for artificial & indoor front end bowlers, but I struggled on both those surfaces with them!!

About 2 years ago I played an exceptional bowler that plays 3 for the County, it was a National singles area semi final, as I was the challenger I chose the green to play on, not mine, that was heavy & full of runs.

His Dreamlines picked up every line & they would not finish on the jack, I won 21 - 2.

Wouldn't do it again as I had tons of grief about not playing on my own green etc, trouble is our green is an excellent bowling green, great drawing on nearly all rinks, both hands, but Dreamlines in those conditions come into their own!!:D:D

I played against a lead a few weeks ago that had dreamline Bowls, i made the mistake of trying to follow her line I should have know better but I have never seen Bowls take such a straight line ( Unbelievable)
We did win when I got my head round watching her Bowls go up, at least my Classics had a bit of a swing and ended up staying in the head.

Hi Devon Bowler,

Have always found watching the opponents woods as a good guide, but do know what you mean about 'Dreamline' and similar, often when you skip it can be quite apparent when a bowler is trying to follow a tight line wood, guess its just experience!!:(

Hi John, well I've had them for almost 9 months, but I have now sold them.

You were right they were no good on bad or slow greens, which I found out over the winter.
So I have just purchased some Classic II, series C, Size 4, Black and dated 18, bowls from an Australian Web site.
Which I should receive early next week and I am hoping our weather improves here so I can get in some practise with them.

Hi Kiwi Bowler,

Thanks for your post Kiwi Bowler, my wife is the only one I know plays with Deamlines and is sticking with them. She leads all the time and is quite good, I don't tell her that.

Great choice Classic 2, I like the tightish line then that hook at the end, it also plays well on most greens including artificial.
I recently tried a friends set of Tigers, not for me.
Your summer starts again soon? our indoor starts beginning of September.

Hope the new woods arrive soon & the weather clears.
