Last year I came across a number of sets of bowls that had either been Spray painted or dipped in paint to change there colour.

The owners were all members of the same indoor bowling organisation and were somewhat put out when I refused to let them play with them in an outdoor competition.

If you come across any like these challenge their legality.

Hi Umpire

Have never seen the complete Bowls painted, but have noticed a few players who have added spots or rings round their bowls, makes them look very strange when coming up the green,
Is this legal, it can be a bit off putting Surfer:cool:

yes like Surfer, I have only seen bowls parted painted with either rings or spots around the bowls.
So I take it this is not legal?

Hi Umpire,

Have played against a Bowler who had painted in the 'Dimples' or grip of his bowls, it is quite memorizing, do you know if this is legal??

It's not on the running surfaces,

Thanks

Ateration to bias.
Law 8.6 - 4 Players or owners who colour the grooves or dimples on a bowl for decoration are not breaking this law.

This law came out in April 2006 when the Crystal mark edition of the laws was published. The practice is becoming more prevalent and is causing discussion amongst umpires regarding should we reject any bowls that are not painted exactly the same. Its a grey area as far as I'm concerned as I would never dream of doing this to my bowls.

Hi Umpire,

Many Many thanks, had been of concern to me, can understand your point if someone does not paint each wood exactly the same.

I agree with you I would never do this to my woods. I do find the opponents woods quite hypnotic when they are coming up the green when trying to judge the weight.

Thanks again,

John, the point that is causing some umpires ( not Me ) concern is that when bowls are inspected they have to bet of the same set, have the same stickers on and be a matching set. If you get one or even two that has been decorated different from the others are they a matching set.

Hi The Umpire,

Understand what you mean, the bowler who had the painted spots has now changed his woods for a colored set, 'RED', so thats the end of painted dimples, for a while.

Never thought his old woods were legal as some of the paint had come off some of the dimples, looked a right mess.

Thanks John.

Greetings All,

I have a few questions regarding painting my bowls.
Are you allowed to paint the running edge of the bowls?
would it effect how the bowl rolls?

And I was wondering if these bowls would be considered legal?

Hi Avibank

Love the pictures of your Bowls I have never seen anything like this before,
know a few Bowlers who would have a fit if they played against someone with Bowls like these,
Did you paint these Bowls or are they something new that has been brought out,
Not sure if they are legal

Great question Kiwi Bowler, that also would means that if you pain your dimples they would have to be the same on each wood????

Love the design, would cause a bit of fuss in my club!!!:D

The bowls would fail (certainly if I were inspecting them) as they do not comply with rule 8.1.3 - players emblems can be within the grooves or paint the dimples or grooves as per rule 8.6.4. Rules taken from here (http://www.worldbowlsltd.co.uk/laws/section3.html#bias)

These don't comply so fail as far as I am concerned. They might be accepted in club competitions but I would certainly uphold any objection to them even within the club.

kiwibowler, I will now take my tongue out of my cheek and say that Edinburghump is quite correct. If I was officiating in a compwtition I would have to fail them.

Not sure what painted Bowls would look like after they had been hit a few times when the Skip does a few firing shots, but I love the Picture of your Bowls

Hi every one

Thanks for the reply :)

They were actually props in a local movie , and now reside as a display at a South African bowling club.
I think they were spray painted . They are definitely not a new product :)
Haha Id love to just try and see if I get away with it :)

What about painting the running edge like in this example?

Yes that's different, but I don't think it would be allowed.

What about painting the running edge like in this example?

They would also break the rules and would fail if challenged.

I think it would be a good idea might make the game a bit more interesting to see larger more colorful emblems on the Bowls,
But it wouldn't work if Players started painting Bowls can you imaging what they would look like after the Skips had given them a few firing shots you would have bits of paint all over the green:(

Hi Everyone

I spent a long time last night painting the dimples on my Burgundy Bowls I only painted four of the dimples each bowl, it was a difficult job because I didn't have an even number of dimples and if I have read the rule right each Bowl has got to be identical,
Also printed off a copy of the rule because I am playing in a National Pairs Comp next Saturday and I know my opposition is a right stickler for the rules, and she will pounce on anything that she is suspicious of,
Shall put a picture on of my Newly Painted Bowls on I had to do this because my Club Changed the Stickers to a dark Burgundy and I keep throwing Wrong Bias,
My team Mates were getting very annoyed with me
