I have been bowling for a few years, and I am still confused about what is acceptable to wear as hats, the men seem to get away with all sort of styles I have been told off a few times, I am at present wearing a baseball cap, which is really uncomfortable and messes up my hair, I sent off to an Australian site and managed to get a really comfortable hat which give me good sun coverage, does anyone know what are the rules on ladies hats, a confused bowler

I think women bowlers should keep to the rules - after all it was men who invented bowls!
Im only joking (half) but it is much nicer to keep a proper dress code on the green.

Hi pea bowler , thanks for your reply, we have a high percentage of skin cancer, and the large rimmed official hat will not stay on in any windy weather.
Theofficial base ball cap, only gives protection for the front of the face, leaving the ears neck and a lot of the face at risk, I know putting on sun tan cream will help, but each game takes a good three hours.
I do agree it looks much better if we are all wearing the same , but it would be wonderful if our officals could look at what other bowlers are wearing, and come up with something senseable for us to wear, as head gear, It was not so long ago that we had to wear tights even for roll up, in the height of the summer, its like trying to clime Mount Everest, but hey we are winning, coloured kit and cropped trousers, defenately getting there!!!!!

I sympathise with you on the ridiculous hat rules!

I don't think that Officialdom in the UK realise just how serious the issues of skin cancer and heat/sunstroke are. The most important part to protect is the head re. sun and heatstroke, so why is the current 'acceptable' head-wear either a sun visor, which gives no protection whatsoever, or the archaic, trilby type mutation ...which is 1950's W.I. personified and does not provide adequate shade?

The only answer I can come up with is wear your sun hat of choice and be damned! If interrogated by the Powers That Be, put it to them that you don't wish to become a victim of any of the ills that prolonged exposure to the sun can cause, and see if they can argue logically with the facts. I am quite susceptible to heat/sunstroke - it's not pleasant, it can be avoided by wearing a hat and keeping well hydrated on the green. It is also very insidious and can creep up in no time...so I for one will be wearing a sun hat in my future comps and if anyone wants to argue the point, I will tell them exactly why. What we women should do is rebel a bit more and get the official dinosaurs to see sense :p

Thankfully male bowlers don't have this issue with hats - we can wear whatever we like (so long as it is white for those competitions)
