Hi Mary,
Thanks for you warm welcome, looking forward to sharing bowls ideas from
here and around the world (sounds great).
Couple of Ladies are going to join this forum in the New Year, they are from my Club, but typical women the delay is choosing a name!!!
They are going around 'Maple Syrup' etc, sounds as if there stuck in it!!!!
We play against a few touring sides during a year one or two from the
U.K. so lots to talk about.
Wishing you Mary and all Seasonal Greetings,

Hi All,
Just talking to my relatives in South Wales, England, they are saying how cold it is in England at the moment.
They are coming to Leaside, Canada next month currently it is -11 with a fair blizzard just finished, I said with a laugh that they will be acclimatised time they arrive!!!
Indoor Bowling is getting busy with a lot of competitions coming into the final stages. You can see why I like indoor bowling I an in my 60s and it's
always too cold outside!

Hi All,
Hope you are all keeping well, we are busy bowling and getting the rooms ready for the relatives next month from the U. K.
You can imagine the conversation on the phone is all about the temperature and what to bring, I said 'just the 'money', the wife did not think that was funny!!!!!
Still stable weather around at the moment for time of year it's -11.
Told them to bring the usual warm clothes lots on thin layers.
Bowling is going well was expecting to get knocked out by now but still in, so busier than normal.
Take care
Super Wick8-)
Hi Super Wick
Hope your guests had a nice holiday, and that they missed the snow they would have wondered what they were coming to,
It has been so cold these last weeks, your relatives if they didn't bring the right clothes would have been frozen think you gave them very good
advice, When I go on holiday always take the most useless things hubby reckons I pack everything except the kitchen sink, lets hope they
enjoyed themselves and the bad weather didn't put them off England

Thanks Sam for the post,
I don't think we have stopped laughing the weather here is as normal, feet thick then when looking at world news and the U.K. looks just like here!!!!
They are lucky they have a good neighbor looking after the house in the U. K.
The relatives go home in another week having a great time seeing all the sights, I think they find it amassing how we cope with the conditions and life carries on as normal.
Will update when they have left for home,
Take care,

Sound like here, Snow has gone now but we are getting flooding with all the rain fed up with this unpredictable Weather its been the Coldest Winter in the UK for a good few years
Its Good your relatives have someone looking after their house, had the pipes freeze out side, didn't realize till it got warmer caused one hell of a mess, try getting a plumber this time of the year, scarcer than hens teeth

Hi All,
Relatives gone back home, I don't think they missed the snow here, I think they found the depth and constant cold hard to get use to although some consolation with the U K just as cold.
They were well impressed at our sports facilities and the indoor bowling, we do invest and place great store in being able to relax well at sports.
They play just outdoor bowls, and are looking forward to the Green opening in late April we open a bit later.
Hope the U K is warming up,

Got to admit England seems to be way behind a lot of Countries for sports facilities, Bowling greens are closing down and indoor clubs are getting fewer, the councils are very keen to sell off any land for housing
And some greens are in very desirable areas its all about money very sad state of affairs :(
Bowling Clubs are under a lot of pressure to find extra cash, know one or two Council owned greens where they are insisting on the Clubs
cutting and maintaining the greens, after years of the Council doing this service,
In other Countries Sports are a top priority, over here they are making it more difficult to stay open,
kiwi bowler
02-28-2009, 08:30 PM
Interesting, we have quite a few clubs here on council land - but the bowling club's do all the work and maintenance.
Hi Kiwi Bowler up until recently a lot of Council Owned greens were taken care of by the Local Council green cutting even the flowers around the
club
But as cash gets tighter they are putting pressure on Clubs to take over the maintenance these are small clubs a lot without bars and not a lot
of ways to raise funds can see a few close, Can see the Councils rubbing their hands as they own the land, :(
Morning everyone its the Indoor Bowling Clubs that are more at risk, we have seen a number close its the ones which are Council run the excuse is falling numbers but the truth is they want something in this space to earn more cash
So much for keeping the elderly population fit and healthy:(:(

Hi Kiwi Bowler,
Interesting comments on council involvement, have noticed in the U. K. there is a definite policy of Councils to put the onus on Bowling Clubs to be run more on a commercial basis. Historically there has been a mis mash
of terms for Clubs often in the same area.
A lot of Clubs on council land paid peppercorn rents and the green and surrounds were maintained by the council. Now as leases have come up for renewal Clubs are being asked for a more commercial rent and maintain there own Green and surround!!!
Have seen stories in National press where there are plans to charge for car parking for bowlers using Bowling greens. This type a charge could be the Death Nell for Clubs in this position.
Thanks for the info in New Zealand.

Hi Worldbowlers,
Just an update as our indoor season is coming to an end with some exciting indoor finals, our outdoor season is about 5 weeks behind that of many countries including the U.K.
I really enjoy our summers and as the weather warms I feel we are not too far away!!!
We have a few touring sides at our wonderful club, so you never know I might be meeting a fellow 'Worldbowler'.
Have a great Summer Bowling,

Hello Kiwi Bowler,
If only we had 8 months outdoor Bowling, some years it's only 4 months, waiting for that bit of global warming to come our way.
Our summers a great, I think we really enjoy them also we have several touring sides at our Club, I always pass on my e-mail address and have built up friendships from all over.
New Zealand sounds great, must help a bit having all the weather so trainning can go on for so long in all sports, and of course the WILL TO WIN!!!

Great to hear from you again, Club and Local championships/tournaments in full swing at the moment! Winning some and losing a few, seem to be able to hang in the Singles competitions but not making a lot of progress in the team games.
It either says something about me or I'm just poor at picking my team mates!!!! Still in the Club singles up to quarter finals we play these on a play by date. and enjoying myself. We do get a lot of touring sides from all over despite the current times!!

Hi All Bowlers,
Hope every one is well? Bowls in Canada is as busy as ever, touring sides and club competitions etc.
A great time of year for us I think we enjoy our summer more because of such a cold hard winter. Many visitors just can't believe the change of conditions from summer to winter.
We have had a very busy summer with our touring sides although a few less than normal because of the global slowdown, well thats what they tell us!!!
Hope you enjoy the rest of the season, for those in the 'Summer season', and if you are coming to Canada let me know.

Hi Super Wick,
Thanks for you posts from Canada, was wondering if you have many touring sides from England??
10 years ago in the U. K. my Club was getting 2-3 a week and was a great income generator + good bowling for all.
These days with the cost of Hotels/Tours & credit crunch we are lucky to have 1 a month??
I do see overseas tours advertised in the U.K. (although not many to Canada).
Look forward to hearing from you, some friends of ours are going on holiday next summer to Canada July August right in the bowling season as they say they need to miss the cold weather from September onwards.

Hi Frankie,
Thanks for your comments, yes we do have a few Touring sides from the U.K. but so so busy this year due to the 'Credit Crunch', I think most of the bowlers being retired are complaining of less money to spend due to lower % rates on there savings!!!!!
If your friends are coming next year be sure to let me know so if possible will give them a warm welcome!!!!

Hi Super Wick, sorry for the late reply, during the winter here I usually still play outdoor bowls - there's lots of clubs with artificial greens around in Auckland that play winter competitions.
But this previous winter I pulled out due to a couple of unexpected family deaths:(.
But our season has started and I am playing again, currentely I'm still in the consistency singles, with my second days play today.
By the way how did you get on in your champ singles in the end?
Super Wick
10-05-2009, 09:22 PM
Hi Kiwi Bowler,
Sorry to hear about the deaths if the family, it does put everything into perspective. Do hope things are settling down as much as they can.
Interesting to hear about your winter games outside on artificial!
makes me very envious, here if you go outside in the winter you have to dress up in winter gear and be prepared, we would lose our woods in the ice & snow!!!!
Thanks for asking about my success or not in the singles, well I lost in the final after having a great start 11 -2 up!!!! Still this is the best ever and the spin of is that I'm being 'head hunted!!!!!!!) for some of the top teams next season, after being ignored for years, my time has come!!!!!!!
Do hope you are still going in your singles??

But I'm out of the Champ Singles, which we had on last weekend, I did how ever get to the last 4:).

Morning Kiwi Bowler,
Often wonder when bowlers say it's all luck, wicks etc, when competitions come to an end, usually the same faces are around most years in the final stages!!
You sound like me, always good to lose to the winner!!!!
There is a local open singles competition with around 60 entries each year, they have a trophy for the best score against the eventual winner, I've won the competition once but had that dammed 'best score, looser' trophy 3 TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mind you against 3 different winners!:D
My indoor bowling is going O.K. have the weight now and in demand!!!!

It's been below freezing for a while, the old guage shows -5 but feels a lot colder, snow falling as I look so a bit of shoveling coming up.
Bit of indoor going on we open May 10th next year, funny how you look forward to outdoor bowling, AND warmer weather.
See the posts from down-under envious at times but wouldn't swap my way of life, least don't have to keep out the SUN!!!!
Happy Xmas to one and all plenty of snow if you want some!!!!
Hi Super Wick,
Happy Xmas to you and hope Canada is not so disruptive as the U K at the moment.
Tried to make the Indoor bowling last night but the traffic has dreadful all struggling with a bit of snow on the ground, first this year, could also be the last!!
We all managed to make the game' County Fours semi final, unfortunately the opposition was 1 short, stuck in traffic.
All trying to be reasonable but a nightmare trying to rearrange before Xmas as last day 22/12/09!! Have to wait & see,

Hi All,
Thanks John, in the depths of winter at the moment, guess same each year so prepared for the weather.
Interesting on national news watching travel chaos in Europe, because after we get the first snow/ice the roads are cleared to form a path then maintained throughout the winter when ever possible. Can understand how difficult it can be we the occasional bad weather!!
Indoor bowling is a bit sporadic at the moment due to work commitments as we are so busy, must not moan as couple months ago lay offs were possible!!!
Looking forward to outdoor in May!

Evening Kiwi Bowler,
As I get older I do envy warmer climates especially this cold dark time of year, if we did not have such a close family I think we might have mover South some years ago.
Although we do have a good quality of life, our outdoor season is quite short making indoor longer, prefer outdoor I think because being shut up for the winter months!!!
So enjoy the sunshine Bowls & company.

Hi Super Wick,
Our summer bowls season here in NZ usually goes from September to the end of April, 8 months.
Then during the winter we can still play outdoor bowls at the clubs with Artificial greens.
My current club closes down for the winter, it has 2 Star weed, grass greens, 8 rinks on each.

Hello Kiwi Bowler,
Thanks for info really interesting on what goes on in your part of the world!!!
Our winter makes outdoor play impossible because at times it's a complete wipe out, although we have great indoor facilities, which are quite reasonable (costs wise) after traveling to the venue.
Trouble is am so busy with work that bowling has to take second place, few months ago work was quite quiet!

Lovely to hear of the hot weather Down Under such a contrast to ours, still both extremes bring their problems.
Bowling indoors a lot now as work is quieter!! pleased with my bowling manged to see a bit of the world bowls via the satellite (not a lot to do in our winters) as in other posts the secret is in the delivery, just like golf, relaxing swing under a bit of tension:wink:

Love this site as often read the odd snippet on how the extreme conditions transform in the short term the community, then relate to us and how the human race adapts to all conditions!!!

Evening Everyone
We are now starting to get warmer weather here in the UK its been one of the Coldest Winters ever,
But today has been more spring like only a few more weeks before our Summer Season outdoor starts, we are already having our Saturday Spring Clean where hopefully a good number of members turn up and get the Club House looking good,
Sure to be a few grumbles when the same people turn up and the majority of members don't do anything,
Think our Committee has a Secret ploy to get all members working.

Hi Everyone,
Bowling in full swing!! open day last week lots of interest and a great turnout from new potential bowlers.
Green is bowling well credit to our green keeper and helpers, hope those that are now in the summer season are enjoying outdoor bowling, I really do enjoy the open air, and at times envy those who have a long out door season and warmer climates.

Hi Super Wick
I'm just wondering if your out doors greens are heavy at the start of your season, like those in the UK?

Morning Kiwi Bowler,
Thanks for your interest, our winters are hard but grass being grass seems so resilient, heaviness in early 'geens' I expect is somewhat similar to the U.K.
Our greens do speed up rapidly a lot of work is done by the green keepers, the Club is very proud of our greens and facilities which has at times hosted the Canadian open.
Have attached a photo from 2009 showing a bit of the green at the official opening of our new clubhouse!

Leaside Lawn Bowling Club is located in the community of Leaside in Toronto (http://www.torontotourism.com/), Ontario, Canada (http://www.travelcanada.ca/travelcanada/app/).
Our excellent greens have drawn raves from visiting bowlers. We have hosted championships such as the Canadian Open. In addition we have a comfortable clubhouse and congenial members who will welcome you.
Lawn bowling occurs every day of the week from May to September. We bowl in the morning, afternoon and evening, sometimes with set teams and at other times, in casual "tag" games. We hold a variety of tournaments throughout the season. During the winter, we have indoor bowling and card game evenings.
We love to have new members. Please visit our Membership (http://www.leasidebowls.ca/membership.htm) page for more information.
We welcome companies, associations and groups and visitors from near and far. If you would like to arrange an event please visit our Group Bowling at LLBC (http://www.leasidebowls.ca/group_company_bowling.htm) page.
If you have never bowled before, please visit us for a day to learn the game and we will provide instruction, bowls and coaching to get you started. If you would like to visit us please see our Membership (http://www.leasidebowls.ca/membership.htm) page.
If you are an experienced bowler who will be visiting Toronto, please join us for a game or two. See our Bowling Schedule (http://www.leasidebowls.ca/in_house_bowling.htm) for game times.

Thanks for the interest Kiwi Bowler, have been doing great until beginning of July, doing the garden at home and somehow fell & caused a small fracture in the right leg, didn't feel small at the time.
In a bit of a small plaster have been renamed 'Hop Along'!!!!
Only another couple of weeks to go & back in the swing, I hope, could have been worse.
Pic below from our Canada day celebration unfortunately not in it back in the club house with the leg up!!!

Hi Super Wick
Sorry to hear about your accident, but at least you are having nice hot weather over there.
My pairs partner on Sunday, said he had been taking to his son that morning who lives in Canada and he says the temp was 35 deg.
Boy we never get it that hot over here or as as cold as you do in the winter.

Thank you Kiwi Bowler, we do get the extremes of the weather, Thunderstorms at the moment with todays temp forecast around 27, expect todays bowling will be called off.
Have enjoyed the rest this summer & up to date with the paper work.

Hi Surfer,
Thank you for your kind comments, we do take great care & pride in our Club.
Unfortunately I've been out for most of the season due to a small accident started to bowl again last week. The rest seems to have done me good as my form came back after a couple of days & looking forward to the club singles next week, trouble is the wife thinks I'm overdoing it!!!

Hi Super Wick,
Thank you for your posts I find it interesting hearing about bowling from all over the world.
I find traveling around the U K in my job and staying a few months here & there, I always visit a bowling club to try & keep my arm in form.
When does the bowling in your part of Canada come to an end before the winter sets in???

Hello Early Shift,
Thanks for your interest, we open early May, this year we plan to close 8th October, although most games are finished late September so its weather permitting!!
Winter when it comes means thats the end of outdoor bowling so its clear to all when the green has to close but we try to get as much out of our summer as we can.
Know what you mean about keeping your arm in after an accident to me this year Ive tried to bowl in a wheel chair to my disappointment really struggled!! Back on my feet now and making the best out of whats left of the season!!:)

Hi Super Wick,
Great info about Canada, we have family living in Toronto, surprises me how the winter sets in and the cold etc, they have settled well and love the life!!:)
Loved the pictures could never get the family interested in Bowls, they have the problem of thinking its an old person game!!

Hi Blocker,
Thanks for your info, pity about the family not into Bowls, there are some great clubs around Toronto my favorite if you have not visited is the Kew Bowling Club, if you search on the internet you can see its near the beach.
Great place when the weathers fine!!!

Hi Blocker,
Sure you will have another great time, have sent you a private message with a contact number if you want a roll up!!
The contact is a friend I met when playing a representative match against them last year.
They will make you more than welcome, the bar could also be open!
