Hi All,

Lot's of talk around O.Z in lawn Bowls revival, especially with the more relaxed go-ahead Clubs.
Many run these open events every Sunday afternoons, finishing with a Barbie, article from one of our papers below.

Barefoot bowls: the dress code is strictly casual

'Nice Stevie, that's shot bowl I reckon." "Yeah mate, it looks like we've got room to draw a second one, too. But we should get a back bowl in there to defend the drive."

In Australia, as in the UK, discussing lawn bowls strategy has traditionally been the preserve of older folk, usually kitted out in club whites for an afternoon on the green. But then a funny thing happened: Aussies discovered that lawn bowls is the perfect outdoor social activity, combining as it does fresh air and sunshine with a beer and a game everyone can play.
These days, an earnest green-side chat about whether to draw a shot on the forehand might as easily be heard among a bunch of chic young things celebrating a 21st, a group of city professionals on a company bonding session or a few lads from the local rugby team.
The game's revival in Australia began at the turn of the millennium, as clubs recognised that their foundation post-war generation membership was dwindling and few young people were interested in taking up what was perceived as an activity for seniors.
The game seemed destined to wither away, until a handful of clubs began inviting non-members to play on Sundays. The spark lit a fire, and by the time a hit TV show featured its groovy young cast drinking beer and trading banter over a "barefoot bowls" session, it had become a social phenomenon.
Clubs around Australia now encourage non-members to play and welcome visitors from overseas. Barbecue facilities and stereo speakers carrying pop tunes and disco classics feature at many clubs on Sunday afternoons - some even put on live jazz bands. And you could hardly ask for a more relaxed club dress code than the bare feet, T-shirt and shorts that comprise the standard uniform of the social lawn bowler.
It's an unbeatable way to mingle with the locals, too: as one of Sydney's leading bowls clubs associations has it, "Have a Beverage, BBQ, Bowls&Bonding session with us and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere on the greens secure in the knowledge that everyone - no matter what level of fitness or age - can participate".
So if you're visiting Australia, and whether you can employ phrases such as "kiss the jack" with confidence, or you know the difference between a backhand and forehand draw, you will find few cheerier ways to spend an afternoon out in the Aussie sunshine

Could be a lot of fun, not so easy to get new members sure the Australians have the right idea, getting the committee to see it, Is another matter Crabie:rolleyes:

Morning Good Idea for Australian Greens but with the Weather we've had
Hell of a lot of damage could be done by a dozen or so non Bowlers chucking the wood up the green, the policy at our Club is that New Bowlers have to be With the Club Coach for a number of Lessons, Bigbear

Wouldn't work over here, beach gear is definitely out can see us now with shorts shivering in the rain
Even when we get really hot summers we are not allowed to wear tops without sleeves
End up with brown arms up to the elbow looks dreadful when us girls wear summer tops
Still in the dark ages :(

Shouldn't think we will get any snow this year, don't usually get much snow in Cornwall its a lot milder down here than up Country
Bundyboy was talking about this bare foot Bowling and saying how much money the clubs are making
Its so good to encourage New Bowlers into the sport sometimes have open days for beginners we find its getting people who you know to give it a try that has the biggest success Surfer:cool:

Hi All,
Lots of good ideas for raising a few pounds and getting interest from possible new members.
Do like the 'barefoot, idea don't have to worry about shoes at the beginning for possible new bowlers.

Hi Surfer,

I would be well told off if I said 'we never have Snow', around here.
If I am on the 'Green', & say, it's a lovely day no rain today, you guessed it, the next thing the sky clouds over and we are rained off.

Do hope you get no Snow, maybe a sprinkling a Xmas time!!!:p

Hi John,

Four weeks to Xmas, last thing you want in U K would be Snow. Was on holiday in U K a few years ago near Edinburgh we drove up the motorway from Manchester, truly awful conditions, not a lot of snow but made the conditions really dangerous with all the traffic still passing at speed!! Give me sunshine anytime..

Hi Roo,
In Melbourne this weekend we have had more rain than for the total of September, October and November. It hasn't stopped. That's great as we are in water restrictions stage 3c, which means no hand watering your garden with a hose and only 3 minutes showers. We have only 34% water in our dams so hope they get a huge lift this week. Of course all pennant has been cancelled.

Hi Bundyboy,

Know what you mean but we do get our fair share of sunshine. The wife's family are all from the U K and when they phone/e-mail always going on about the weather, yet when they come to stay ITS TOO HOT!!!!

Typical I say, although I couldn't live in snow/cold with me bowling being interrupted too much.

Have been away for a few days doing Xmas shopping so not missed much.

Just wondering what the forecast is around the world for Christmas.
Here in Melbourne the forecast is for a fine 26 C, with Boxing Day being 32C. WE have the boxing day test at the MCG so it looks like it will be a bumper crowd. Sports mad Melbournians have been known to stand 4 deep watching 2 flys crawl up a wall.
Have a Merry Christmas, it has been great fun talking to everyone. Look forward to continuing in 2009:D:D:D
