when we play bowls, the jack is usually referred to as "the pot", eg. we say "home pot " or "away pot". Is there anyone who can tell me where this saying derived from?

Hi skeav1 and welcome to worldbowler, hope you enjoy the forum.
As for your question, it's a new one to me I have never heard anyone using that saying here in NZ in relation to the Jack in Lawn Bowls.

Hi all long time no speak, Im pretty sure this has come from a derivative of Jack, e.g. "Jack-Pot" "Pot". Aim for the jack, has become aim for the jack-pot, and then aim for the pot! Check out a good page on the work jack: http://www.takeourword.com/Issue097.html

Hi Kernowbowler, never gave it any thought as to where the name came from,
Interesting site, only had a quick look, will go back later, for a browse,
Shall look up the name kitty, have no idea why bowlers call the Jack that, Sam:roll: ,

Played with someone, New to the Club, who asked me to put a Churchill in,
Completely baffled me, until another player told me he wants a back wood,

Hence the Churchill which was his insurance, had a chuckle later, though he was quite mad.

Never heard anyone calling a back wood a Churchill, not a bad idea
Hate it when the number three shouts,we need a back wood,
Can see the oppositions ears pick up, know you've nothing behind,
They are bound to try and take the Jack back,
Can go down shed load, Blondie:roll:

Hi Blondie, know the feeling well, have been caught out a few times,
Golden rule always have a back wood, easy to say, not so easy to do. Surfer8-)

I would just like to say thanks to everyone who replied to my query. I am am amazed how quickly you guys responded. I, myself considered the possibility that it may have come from the term "jackpot", but am not totally convinced of this
