Hello All,
I started bowls this year and have been bowling since April 14th. I practice most evenings for about 1.5 - 2hrs (some people think Im a bit mad I expect!)

Up untill last night I have found that I needed about half an hour to find my line, after this time people start to take notice! my accuracy is generally good and I will normally plant, say three or four bowls within a foot of the jack on a fairly frequent basis.

The big problem has been the first half hour when I am all over the place!

Now about last night. Last night I had a handicap singles game, I played off a five handicap, the other player is a first team player and had no handicap.
My opponant had seen me practice before and was quite nervous, joking that I should not have a handicap at all (must have been watching me after the first half hour!)

Anyway, I got hammered 21 - 8!!! and I only started picking up a few points toward the end! This prompted my opponant to ask how I took my line. I explained in all innocence that it was in my head and after so many ends it became instinctive, and that is why I need half an hour to get going!

I'm not sure that he totally believed me, but he went on to show me how he decided on his line.
His method is to decide on a side and try to stick to it, having done that he identifies a mark on the green and bowls to it, and then adjusts his line to this mark untill he achieves the correct line to the jack, all thats left then is weight.

He got me to try this, and I immediatly started bowling to the jack. I should now be able to achieve a line fairly quickly on any green!

All this is no news to most if not all of you, but if I had not played last night and had my opponant not been so helpful, I would still be taking half an hour to start playing, and been totally unaware of any alternatives.

Now that aspect has been explained to me I feel a bit stupid, but you should never underestimate the ignorance of the novice bowler!!!!

Does anyone else know of any new bowlers are making similar mistakes? I am sure they (and me) would appreciate any information or tips from all you experienced bowl players!

best regards.............Laurence

Hi Campbell, know what you mean, when you start it takes a year or two to get the hang of things.
Doing the right thing with the practice,
Only problem with finding a spot on the green to aim your wood, is when you meet an experienced player they will take the mat right up over your guide,
And its a sod to find your line again, lost the game before you know whats happening,
I look at the width i think my wood needs, and if i want a wide wood i go right over to the other side of the mat,
Hard to explain, just sit and watch, the best bowlers in the club, where they stand on the mat,Devon Bowler:wink: good luck

Only advice i can give you is draw, its so easy to see a wood near the jack, and put on a bit of weight, had a Skip who kept saying get second wood, you cant go more than one down, it gives you time to find your line and weight, let us know how you get on, Blondie:D

Evening Cambell, sure everyone in the club beat me the first year, got so annoyed, did what you are doing , paid off in the end, Bowls is a practice game, still get dreadful games but getting better, someone told me never change your hand if you have just bowled a good wood, different hand different weight, Angel :D

Hi there, I remember when I started bowling the coach got us to take a mark on the bank and adjust from there:grin: for my masters I take about 1 1/2 to 2 rings. After one bowl on each hand I usually know the green to take, that's why I like trial ends in a champ event;)

Think you are doing the right thing, with the practice,
A lot of players will never be any good, because they don't do what you are doing,
There is no answer about finding the line, the green will change as you are playing depending on the weather,
Weight is the answer, if you are playing front end, all your skip will want is woods in the head, keep it going Surfer:cool:

Hi Kiwi Bowler, know we do things different over here, sorry
But what is your masters, and one and a half to two rings,
Know a few chaps who take a line from the rink markings, and usually ask people to move if they are standing in front of them,:cool:Surfer.

Concentration is the answer, get down low and look for your line,
Judge how wide your wood needs to go, and imaging a line to the jack,Some people are naturals, took me years and I'm still trying,:(
