No more Mr Nice Guy?

The WBT's top umpire Bryan Daly believes that bowls needs to shed its mild-mannered image.

'For many years bowls has ambled along and thrived upon its gentle, friendly, impeccably well-mannered image.
Well its time for that to stop .
Seriously, if the game is to carry on progressing, the pleasantries need to be well and truly kicked into touch a lot of them anyway.'

This was just some of the comments in the ,Nationwide bowler magazine' I for one do not agree,I have been bowling for a number of years, and to change our well mannered and friendly ways, would be a disgrace, what do you think????? (some of the gamesmanship at County level IE, win at all costs is already here)

Don't think i would want to bowl, in an atmosphere, of win at all cost, this is not what the game is about, would give up bowling,if this happened.

These are ridiculous things to say, have read the article, do we have to start being nasty and rude to each other, just so the game will get press coverage, no thanks,

Joined my club, because, it was a friendly and enjoyable sport to take up, we don't need, to stop being mild mannered, etc we do get some people who want to win at all costs, and end up causing all sort of problems, surely this umpire cant be supporting behavior like this.:(

The main thing I like about bowls are how friendly people are, even complete strangers that you have never meet before.

Love the game Love the people, would hate to play in an atmosphere where manners and good behavior were not part of the done thing, for an umpire to give these kind of views,:( he is just looking for publicity.:(

Leave things alone, we have been doing very well, without someone coming out with all the rubbish, and an umpire at that, what does he want us to do, end up like some of the football players, punching each other,:(don't think so.

Hi Wrong Bias, got to agree with you, did read the full article, which was a load of rubbish, he seemed to be saying that if you did not want people to think we were old dotty people , we should stop being so nice to each other, and get more of the aggression into our sport, to attract younger people,

Neve been any lack of competitive spirit in any of the games/matches I've played in. I dont see that courtesy and manners have to take a back seat just because you want to win. I always want to win, but I get a lot of practice at losing graciously!!!

Hi Jackseeker, know what you mean about losing graciously, i do try, but i get more practice than most, i think games are played in good spirit win or lose, would hate our sport to go the way football or rugby has. Angel:(:(
