View Full Version : Honest or a Crafty Move
Hi Everyone I played a national pairs game this morning and when we arrived at the green there was only one rink sat out, I had a discussion with my skip and we know that we should be offered a choice of two rinks the excuse was they thought this rink was the best and that they had four rinks of new bowlers coming to be coached
My skip said she thought that to draw for rinks was a fair way of doing things so we drew for rinks,
The new bowlers coming to be coached never did turn up ? ? ?
We won our game but if we had taken the rink picked who knows what the outcome would have been.
Hi Mary,
Think this is one of the biggest CON out you travel longs distances got Nationals then when you get there ONE rink is set out!!
Rules are clear, You draw from all available rinks, if they try and make you play on one rink when others are free then this amounts to, CHEATiNG, not a crafty move:(
Ignorance of the rules is an excuse!!

It surprises me how often this happens some Bowlers will go to any lengths to get a home advantage, one question if anyone knows do they have to offer you choice of two rinks or is it supposed to be a choice of all available rinks, always been a bit of a gray area for me

Hi Snapper,
This has been on the posts before, even more difficult to get a straight answer from 'Bowls England' have talked to them in the past they eventually said
'ALL AVAILABLE RINKS SHOULD BE DRAWN FROM, yet I still have problems getting a fair draw and can only cause bad feelings before the game starts!!:D
Do know that indoor nationals the challenger can dictate the rink, so confusing, we have played 2 rounds so far in the National mixed pairs been at home so have dictated that we play on our favourite rink!!
it's a really tricky end rink so we have the advantage never knew we were doing anything wrong, rules are very unclear anyway, don't think we will change and offer rinks, next time away, make sure we get a choice:p:o

Always a tricky one, I think that if they have a rink set out itbshould be a good drawing rink and you have to find whatever is in front of you.
Tend not to get wound up as it can upset your own game!8-)
One bowler I know will give you a choice of rinks but one is always an outside rink no nine times out of ten you will pick the inside rink and guess what its her favorite that she plays all her competitions on.
Bit Sneaky I have made this mistake before going to pick the outside rink next time see if its me playing badly or being out bowled.
Sam short for Samantha:rolleyes:

Hi Sam1,
Would think yourself lucky, lots of bowlers in the Nationals break the rules and don't offer a rink!!
Still got to find what's in front of you!!

Hi Frankie,
Quite clear in our County rule book that the home player must ofer
'all available rinks' , any deviation that this is the only one free or the greenskeeper set this one out is deemed as cheating!!
In Nationals understand not so clear but they say it's the same as the County rule.
This one has been hammered in the past!!
Trouble is Bowls Englands CRYSTAL CLEAR rule book is a mess, you can just about say from the book that ' all available rinks must be offered' yet it takes several probing questions to Bowls England for them to say that all available rinks must be offered!!
Crystal clear or what???
Think in my club there is many views on this one, I just play on the rink offered if no choice is given, my mates call me an idiot, but why upset things can ruin your game, sad that the rules are unable to give the very simple rule on which rink to play on:wink:

World Bowls have now made a ruling on this, see this page:
http://www.worldbowlsltd.co.uk/Lawscommitteedecisions.html
At the moment it is the first part on the list 'Law 12', other decision there might be of interest too.

Hi London Pride
This is one issue that really bugs me the times I have turned up for single games and only one rink is sat out, I then have to ask why we cant draw for rinks to be told other games are being played or other rinks are playing badly by the time its sorted steam is coming out my ears,
I am going to get the rule book and carry it in my bowls bag.
Thanks Surfer from a Sunny Cornwall:cool:

Hi London Pride, WELL spotted that's brilliant at last we have clarification on which rink to play on or that it has to be drawn.
This is taken some time am well aware of several enquires to BOWLS ENGLAND well conflicting rules, sawbone that saidbif just one rink is laid out then that is the only available rink to play on.
MANY THANKS!

Absolutely agree, now that WB has made a decision the BE Rules & Regs should be updated for next year to make it crystal clear to all.
Can't see another 'Crystal Mark' edition being printed to clarify which rink to play on, very important however, they could update the rule slip that goes out with all entries, know this has caused great upset in the past!!

Been lots and lots of debate on the first issue, what rink to play on, not been helped by conflicting advice from Bowls England!!
Now they should do the right thing and put it in PRINT!!
Formal clarification would be helpful, just thinking that the change of rule about giving the mat away seems to have passed without any problems and for me has made it a great improvement in the game!!
Same old faces have got through again!!

Asked bowls England for clarification on how the rink to play on is chosen, they said hope to get clarification for next year!!
Seems the very basic thing bowler travels loads of miles and dosen't know if he/ she is going to get a fair choice to play on!
At the moment many many bowlers just offer their favourite rink you can either complain and put up with the bad feeling, come on organises make it CRYSTAL CLEAR:o
You must know there is a problem because you asked the question to World Bowls
