View Full Version : Which Bowl

Hi, I am new to bowls. I bought a second hand set of Hensilite Classics and have been using these for the last 3 months or so. I roll up most evenings and have got on well with these bowls.

The bias is fairly wide and I thought that a slightly less biased bowl may make me a little more accurate (plus I wanted a new set!) anyway I decided on the Hensilite Tiger. This bowl apparently has a draw between the Classic and Classic 2, it is Hensilites second widest drawing bowl after the Classic.

I have just received the bowls and I had a roll up last night, I was very surprised at how narrow they felt compared to the Classics, I am not sure if I can persist with them.

Does anyone have experience of this bowl or have any comments?

Thanks in advance..........Campbell

Hi Campbell, nice to welcome a new Bowler, know someone who changed to Tiger twos, and couldn't get on with them at all, what position do you play, if back end you need to be able to get out round short woods, tigers twos take a real narrow line have you got a week to try them out,and can you return them and get a refund.Sam:(

Welcome Campbell, i play with classic twos, and you cant beat them, got a narrow line which you need in this wet weather, but will take a wide green when needed, i would think twice about Tigers, some people can get on with them, but got a chap on here who was thinking of throwing his in the river, takes time to get used to new woods, need to play a few friendlies, lot of money if you make a mistake.:)

Difficult question, not sure these new narrow bowls are all they are cracked up to be, if you are bowling well, with the woods you have, don't change, why fix something that isn't broken, seen so many chaps change woods, and there game goes to pot.:(

Hi Campbell and welcome, I myself would return your new bowls if you can.

The classic two's are a very good bowl for a beginner and the experienced(not as wide as my masters), but are very consistant draw bowl. You can bowl narrow with them when needed by moving your feet over.

Then when you have been bowling for a few years and have experience you might want to look at changing your bowls.

See if you can get a few different sets from bowling colleagues, and play a few roll ups, then make up your mind, have bought a few sets, and then found i cant get on with them, lost a bit of cash doing this, not so easy selling woods on when they are second hand, know our local bowl supplier, has stopped trading in size fours,:rolleyes:Angel

Know a chap, who tried these woods, couldn't get on with them, said they had too straight a finish, no curve at the end, iIf there were any short woods in front, hard to get round, might be all right for leading,

Hi Cambell, let us know which woods you end up with, bit of a debate about which wood are better, straight or something with a bit of a swing, might be worth sticking with what you have, and see how you bowl this year,

Thats a double Wow that fish is nearly as big as me,do you eat the fish or throw them back, Angel:Dit is a predator has big teeth as well but once out of the water if not handled expertly they can die we try to unhook them (barbless hooks) weigh and photograph them in under 3minutes then gently place the fish back in water and hold it till it gets its breath back fishermans term for water flowing over its gills to get oxygen back into its bloodstream, you know when its recovered as it starts to swim ,release the fish and away it goes.we never kill them, not a fish for novices you have got to know how to handle them firmly but gently and with 100% confidence,as we are responsible for the fishes welfare

Hi All,
Thanks for all the comments, just need to clear up one thing though. These bowls are Tigers NOT Tiger 2's.

Tiger 2's are very straight, the reason I went for the Tiger was that it had a draw in between the classic (wide) and classic 2 (a bit narrower)

I am going to keep going with these (got a match tonight) will let you know how it goes!

I play number two by the way, thanks again for all the advise, sorry for the late reply (computers at work and I have been out the office!)

best regards.............Campbell

Hi all,
Back to my Tigers! played last night and probably had the worst game ever! the team won, but I did'nt contribute very much.

Its like starting to bowl all over again, I really am thinking about throwing these bowls away and going back to the Classics, on the other side of the coin I have only used the tigers for a few hours (3-4)

I know everyone is different, but does anyone have an idea of how long I should perevere? If it takes too long I am going to lose my place in the team!

Got another game tonight (rearranged from last week) I will use the tigers.............perhaps for the last time!

best regards.........Campbell

Hi Cambell, know how you feel, changed woods a few times, ended going back to the tried and tested,
you get used to the width and weight, not sure what to tell you, give them one more game,
the important thing is can you get your cash back, second hand woods its bit like a car, never get back what you paid.:cool:Surfer

Angel

Hi Cambell, changed my woods a good while back, only because they were second hand to start with, and needed re-stamping, took me a good season to get used to the new ones, but if you are playing that badly might need to rethink, could be it was just one of those bad game,us bowlers have, give it one more game before deciding, Angel,:)

Hi Wrong Bias, don't think i could give up fish and chips,
But am still thinking about their eyes, if i saw them swimming around, i couldn't do it, just as well I don't have to catch any, would be very hungry by now, Angel:D:D

Yes It's just practice with a new set of different bowls, the more you can practice to get used to them the better.
But which ever one's you decide on just still to them and get rid of the others.
Other wise you get messed up swapping bowls.

Thanks everyone, I did swap to the classics in the end ! our rink won 26 - 10 but we lost the game by 1 point overall.

I was much happier with the classics, but I am still tempted to keep trying with the Tigers! (£150.00 down the drain otherwise) but I take your point Kiwi bowler..............I have a decision to make!

best regards,............Campbell

Good win Cambell,
Stick with what you know, lost a few pounds myself, buying woods and then cant get on with them, think its part of the sport, best ask around see if anybody is looking to change woods you will take a loss, once it leaves the shop its second hand,8-)Surfer, we lost thirty fourteen last night, artificial green groan.
