My Club is at present trying to raise funds to replace our green and put down carpet this had divided the Club I for one would prefer to stay with a grass green but we are have an aging membership with less and less bowlers able or willing to keep cutting it.
The raising of cash is a problem because half the Bowlers don't want to replace the grass green we have,
Thought I would ask you Bowler what you think going to be a year or so before we can afford it.

I know a club locally that had a synthetic green but eventually lifted it as there were problems with the concrete base breaking up below the green.
It had been well used (during winters as well - they used to have a few events played in snow/hail etc).
Still it was good while it lasted.

Asked a mate of mine the other day, 'Do you prefer artificial or grass'
He said 'Haven't smoked artificial yet'!!
Old ones are the best!!!
On a serious note we have several artificial greens around, best low maintenance, worse when the base/underlay is not right, get runs all over the place!!!
I still prefer grass, but being an indoor bowler I quite like the artificial but does give me quite an advantage against non indoor bowlers!!!

I hate playing on artificial greens when it rains your bowl speeds up I have enough trouble keeping them on the rink and thats when the sun is shining,
Don't think there is much difference between the cost of having grass rinks or artificial.

I prefer grass and the employment of skilled greenkeepers.
I do not like plastic or carpet.

Couldn't agree more Irish Digger you cant beat a grass green you really have to consecrate its when the weather changes and your bowls don't run the same way as before more of a challenge,
These artificial greens have runs which are always the same.

A lot of Bowlers epically older members are voting to replace grass with carpet
1, Can be played on all year weather permitting
2, No grass cutting and costly maintenance
3, Easier to play on no heavy heaving woods up the green
With an aging membership more and more Clubs are going to be going down this route.
Have been on the green this afternoon and there is no way my bowl would reach the head i am one of the so called wrinklies and after this afternoon am seriously considering giving up Bowling,If we had an artificial green there would be no problem
Know which way i would be voting if asked grass or artifical

As I said before, give me grass anytime.
Sure, it has it ups and downs depending on the weather but as Mary said, "It's all part of the challenge."
Who wants to play lawn bowls on a Snooker Table.
I remember a country club I visited a few years ago, it was in a little country town called Bombala, in southern New South Wales,
Bombala RSL Bowls Club (http://www.bombalarsl.com.au/)
The green was natural grass and it was that perfect that I had to kneel down to check to see if it was real.
It was a credit to the greenkeeper.
For the benefit of members not in Australia, RSL is a Military Veterans Welfare Organisation.

Hi Irish Digger
Down here in Devon there is a big demand to replace our grass greens with artificial and we are getting quoted the difference in costs etc of replacing our much loved grass greens and the cost of maintenance,
Its all going to be down to the vote in my Club and I can see myself moving next year if they vote to have artificial.
