Can you remember your 1st year singles at your bowling club?
Did you have a 1st year singles competition and how did you get on in it?
I won my first year singles although there were only 4 in it, that's back in the 1995/96 season.
It was a 2 life system first to 21 shots.
After that I ended up having to play in the Auckland Centre's "Champ of Champ 1st year single's competition".
There were bowlers from the other 50 odd club's in Auckland and it was played as a one life system - sudden death.
Anyway I played very well and got to the last 4 (semi-finals) before loosing to the chap who won it.:)

We don,t have anything like 1st year singles, just club competitions, end up getting beaten badly, not good for the moral, think you are just getting the hang of the game, and wham you get brought down to earth. we do have the unbadged mens singles and the ladies unbadged Kernow cup, if you get into the semi finals or finals, you get so many points to wards your County badge.8-)

Think this is a good idea, gets the new people into competitions, and they are on a level playing field, like it.:)

Sounds like you did very well, got to be a natural, do you get county badges, like in England, if we are badged you have the chance of being picked to play for your county.

Good morning all, had rain here again during the night, it's 8.30am and the sun's coming out now.
Yes we have centre badges if you win a "Champ of champ" event, not got any myself:(. I played in a few champ of champ events in the past, mainly pairs, but never got very far apart from the 1st yr singles.
I have only just returned to bowls:grin: part-time at the end of last season after not playing for approx 3 years.

Like the idea, of first year singles, a bit unfair we encourage new bowlers to take part in club competitions, and we know they are going to take a hammering, but we've all been there, great when one of them takes a star player down, talked about all year.;)

What about Junior events?
For the first 5 years from when one first start bowling they are classed as a Junior and theirs Champ events just for them.
At my first club I won the Junior Champ Singles for my last 3 years as a junior.
There's also tournaments at other clubs for Juniors only.

I played my first competitive singles game last week in our club competition. I was a bit dismayed to be drawn against one of our clubs better bowlers and a previous winner of the competition. In the end I was pleased with how I played, losing 21-13, but winning a few ends along the way. It would be nice though if there was a competition just for us novices as although I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would love to play more singles games, the fact that it's a KO competition means that I will have to wait until next year for another go.

Hi had a bye in the first round, don,t like sitting around, won my first game, won the second game 17 to twenty one, went right down the card, into the quarter final, getting picked up at twenty past nine tomorrow morning, must remember to turn my computer off, went into hibernation, just so tired now but still smiling. :p
Hi Jackseeker,
This is a difficult one & often talked about, on the one hand if you keep playing better bowlers your game will improve quickly & compete at higher levels, on the other hand some newer bowlers get fed up keep being beaten & GIVE UP!!!
When I started I entered as many competition possible including other clubs open tournaments then eventually managed to hang in there & win one or two,
Wish you the best of luck, practice makes perfect,
E. T.
Is there anyone there!!

Hi there, it's interesting how it's so different over there, all our club champs here are a 2 life system, which means you play at least 2 games.
Also the fact that in NZ we have first year singles and Junior singles (the first 5 years as a bowler).
We also have a handicap singles competition at most club which put you on a more even par with the top bowlers:grin:
Angel

Like the idea of a handicapped system, so much fairer, don't know why we havent got one, would be so much better for beginners like jack seeker, not sure how you would work one out, would it be on competitions won, or just length of time you have bowled.:p

Here it's based on your grading and how well you have done in the Champ singles etc.
At my club we play 21ends and leads get between +10 & +12 handicap, 2's between +6 & +8, 3's between +2 & +6, and skips very from -6 to +2. or something like that.

like yourself i also am a new Bowler, do understand how you feel about knock out competitions, would love to play people like myself who are just taking up the sport, get a bit depressed not winning anything, my bowling is improving, but i have a long way to go, would be nice if something could be arranged, for us novices.8-)
