Just when I was enjoying my bowling the old 'fuddy duddies' strike again!!

When you look at games like TENNIS etc, another backward step, what do my fellow Bowlers think, Report Below;

ATTEMPTS to broaden the appeal of lawn bowls have hit a snag with the bowling greens of Queensland proving to be a little conservative when it comes to the latest fashions.

World champion Julie Keegan was told to change her Bowls Australian-sanctioned attire during the state women's championships at Wellers Hill, because it was deemed "too revealing".
Ms Keegan, 43, from the Sunshine Coast, was told by an umpire to change into something "more appropriate" because complaints had been received about her "skort".
Ms Keegan told officials it was an approved garment but she has decided not to wear it to any of her matches since the incident.
"It was amazing," she said yesterday of being confronted on the green.:roll::roll:

Watched a Lady bowling up at Donyatt ,bowling club Somerset, she was a really good experienced bowler, playing in a mixed competition, and wearing a thong under white trousers, it was very noticeable, and it did put the men off their game, not sure if this is fair. tempted to try it myself, not sure if it would have the same effect. blondie.

I might be an 'Oldie', but I don't support Queensland's approach to let these scantly clad women on the Green.
In my day standards were everything, now we have no standards just look what has happened top our society!! it's just not safe to walk out in the evening!!
My George is an umpire, he just can't keep his mind on foot faulting etc with half naked women running around the green!!

Glad they saw sense at last and requested a more decent bowling attire.

Sorry unable to agree with most of you,

sorry oldie ,definately dont agree with you, there is nobody more set in their old ways than me ,but if you dont get rid of these outdated rules bowls has had it,,it is trailing behind badly when compared to other sports, even the top bowlers get less prizemoney than other top sportsmen and women, im talking about the likes of alex marshall and other top bowlers

Thanks 'Wrong Bias', could expect no more from Scotland!!

We hear your more relaxed moral standards result in a good strong
'A S B.O.' for muggings etc,

The point is, and I have seen it all before, when you drop your standards you have to go a long way down before you realize what has happened.

Hope you don't feel upset with my forthright views, have been brought up with decent standards & this is what I think!!!

Have a great day weather is fine here:cool:

Women split on lawn bowls etiquette

KERRY O'BRIEN: In Queensland, the comparatively genteel sport of lawn bowls is being torn apart by an ugly brawl over sexual discrimination.

A group of angry women is taking the sport's hierarchy to task over what it claims is an archaic set of rules.

The women want more relaxed dress rules and a code of conduct that applies equally to both sexes.

But, as Bernard Bowen reports, their quarrel is not with men but with other women:

KATHLEEN RAFFERTY: You know, it is important to have democracy, and we don't have it.

BERNARD BOWEN: That's not a very good...

ANGRY WOMAN: I told you I do not want photos taken of my ladies.

BERNARD BOWEN: The normally tranquil greens of Brisbane's Buranda Bowls Club have become a battlefield, in a fight over sexual equality. It's led to some rather unseemly behaviour.

KATHLEEN RAFFERTY: It's a sport, there shouldn't be fighting. We come for a game of bowls to relax, you know, not to get in among a little Mafia mob.

BERNARD BOWEN: Kathleen Rafferty is one of five younger lady bowlers who are challenging the sport's establishment.Their main complaint is the dress code which they claim is biased against women.

KATHLEEN RAFFERTY: Shorts, for instance, now. A man will wear a nice long pair of shorts in the game, but not over the knee.

And I can't see why my knees would be more immoral than the man playing opposite me, you know?

BERNARD BOWEN: Kathleen and her supporters are also sick and tired of having to undergo spot checks to see whether they're complying with the petticoat rule.

KATHLEEN RAFFERTY: Any lady that's going to walk over to another lady and lift up her dress to see if she's got a petticoat on, it's actually slightly sick, but we won' t get into that one.

We're not back in convents, where we've got to kneel on the desk to see the length of your uniform. And we don't want short, shorts and we don't want short, short uniforms -- just a little bit of choice.

BERNARD BOWEN: Jackie McWhinney is another of the rebels who is fed up.

JACKIE McWHINNEY: Oh, there's just so many things. Like, I had a bowls cloth hanging out of my pocket, and the men always do that -- ladies aren't allowed to.

BERNARD BOWEN: So what happened?

JACKIE McWHINNEY: Well, I got told I had to get off the green if I didn't put that bowls cloth in a pocket.

KATHLEEN RAFFERTY: And then there's the hat issue.

I think that's a real bone of contention with younger women, because they're very aware that in Queensland you must wear a hat, but not if there's a gale-force wind.

I mean, it's ludicrous having to put your hand up and stop two games to ask permission from Madam President.

BERNARD BOWEN: You had to put your hand up to ask permission to take your hat off?

KATHLEEN RAFFERTY: You had to leave your rink -- stop your game, leave your rink and go over and stop Madam President's game and put your hand up and say, "May I remove my hat?" It's ludicrous, isn't it?

JACKIE McWHINNEY: There's so many rules the ladies have got. It's just ridiculous. You know, there's not many young women coming into the club because of all these rules. There's a hell of a lot of young blokes.

BERNARD BOWEN: Cigarettes are another sore point. While men can smoke while they are playing, the women are forbidden.

KATHLEEN RAFFERTY: That's like a husband and wife going into a restaurant and going into a smoking area and the restaurateur saying the lady can't smoke but the man can.

BERNARD BOWEN: In this campaign for equality there's an unusual twist.
It's pitting women against women, with the men seemingly siding with the reformers.

JOHN MULCAHY: My own opinion is that I support them for the fact that I really think that some of the rules the ladies got are archaic and should have been changed a long, long time ago.

CHRIS ANDERSON: Most of the men consider these rules outdated, need to be changed to get a bit of a life and younger people back playing for the ladies division.

BERNARD BOWEN: If the men don't have to wear hats but the ladies have to wear hats, if the men can smoke and the ladies can't, on the face of it, that's discrimination, isn't it?

KAREN WALTERS, QLD ANTI-DISCRIMINATION COMMISSIONER: It seems to me like that, yes.

BERNARD BOWEN: If the women have to wear shorts below the knee, does that on the surface appear to be discriminatory?

KAREN WALTERS: I'd say so, I'd say so.

BERNARD BOWEN: Even though she's Queensland's Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Karen Walters doesn't have the power to adjudicate the issue. That's because the State discrimination laws don't cover rules affecting club members.

Are these sporting clubs like the last bastions of discrimination?

KAREN WALTERS: Look, from a State perspective, to some extent, yes, the archaic activities in their service provision to members are sanctioned simply because they can't come within the parameters of the State legislation.

BERNARD BOWEN: But Karen Walters warns the clubs that Federal legislation does apply and that's exactly where this dispute could be heading.

KATHLEEN RAFFERTY: That we have a massive amount of women that are actually, they support us, but they fear the ramifications if they are outspoken like ourselves.

BERNARD BOWEN: Kathleen Rafferty and her band claim they've been subjected to a campaign of harassment, including abusive phone calls and expulsion from the Queensland Ladies Bowls Association.

The 7:30 Report approached the Association and Buranda Ladies Club officials for comment but were refused.

ANGRY BOWLS CLUB MEMBER: Please take your cameras away or I will get the police to do so.

BERNARD BOWEN: Despite bringing the issue to a head, the reformers make no apologies.

KATHLEEN RAFFERTY: It's a brilliant, magic sport, so yep, we're going to win.

Do not agree with you Angry Women, when i started bowling, An official lady member came into the changing rooms bent down and ran her hand down my leg, thought she had gone mad or was some sort of pervert, barked at me are you wearing tights, it was the middle of August and scorching hot, had to go down to Village shop and buy some, it was only some sort of friendly, moved on a bit since then, us Ladies need to keep moving.

How many 'LEGHORNS' are out there??

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Lawn bowls has long had the reputation of a genteel game enjoyed mainly by the grey hair set, but a visit to a buzzing Sydney club on a sunny Saturday paints a very different picture.
The traditional white bowlers' uniform, which earned lawn bowlers the disparaging nickname "leghorns" referring to old chickens bent over feeding, are nowhere to be seen.

What a fuss about nothing, don't think this bit of ladies clothing would suit, the majority of ladies, think the cropped trousers, make some bowlers look huge across the rear end, much better with the regulation skirt, might be a bit old fashioned with my views,

Think this is a bit much, people are getting obsessed with what us lady Bowler wear, its how we can play the game, and our skill on the green, Bowls is a great leveler, you can be eighty or thirty, age is no barrier, like to see what some of these people look when they are eighty, probably sitting in front of the tele, too large to move, at least we keep fit,

Some of my friends have followed this thread & think I have portrayed myself as an old traditionalist and gave the impression that I resent young pretty girls getting all the attention, nothing is further from the truth!!!!

To help clarify I fully support all initiatives to help young people join our sport, if fact I was fully behind the initiative bellow;

'Chris Derksema plays a shot during a game of barefoot lawn bowls at a bowling club in Manly in Sydney April 22, 2007. Lawn bowls has long had the reputation of a genteel game played by the grey haired set but young bowlers in bare feet and wearing casual clothes are taking to the manicured lawns in increasing numbers'.

Hope this clarify my position & only want to uphold standards!!!!!

Hi Kiwi Bowler, my bowling is not going that well, i do try, but i think if i relaxed more, it would be better, when i see someones bowl next to the jack i tend to put on more weight, and miss everything, so frustrating, know i shouldn't do this, but when i take weight off I'm short, some people are just naturals, got the club competitions to come yet am thinking of pulling out, might just sit on the side with a nice glass of wine bowl better from there.:cool:

Hi there, we are sort of opposite to you as we had our closing day approx 4 weeks ago.
Anyway I only came back to bowls mid way through last season after been away from the game for 3 years.
But I did play in 2 Champs, the pairs and triples In the triples 2 guys in their late 80's asked me to skip them and we did very well. We even upset the top team along the way and ended up in the finals before losing. But we were very happy with our result.
I going to try and play as much bowls as I can over our winter, so I will be more bowls ready when our bowls season starts in September.
